What do you use a weight bench for?

A weight bench is a versatile, essential piece of equipment in every gym and home gym. It offers a wide range of possibilities for strength training and can be used for many exercises targeting different muscle groups.

From beginners to experienced athletes, a weight bench can be adapted to different fitness levels and training goals.

Our range of benches

At NRG Fitness, we offer several types of bench, each suited to different exercises. We distinguish between the following types:

Training benches

A training bench lets you perform a wide variety of exercises. Its adjustable backrest can be set flat or upright, so you can train different muscle groups with dumbbells.

Some of our models also have wheels, which makes them easy to move.

Weight benches

For barbell training, a weight bench is a sensible choice. It provides stability and safety when training with heavy weights and is mainly used for chest exercises such as the bench press.

Preacher curl benches

For biceps exercises, a preacher curl bench is ideal. It is specially designed to support your arms during biceps exercises.

Inversion tables

An inversion table is mainly used by people with back complaints. It lets you hang upside down to reduce pressure on the spine, which can stimulate blood circulation and relax the back muscles.

Good to know: the maximum load varies from bench to bench, so check the specifications carefully before you buy.

Train every muscle group with an adjustable bench

Using an adjustable bench in your workout opens up a world of variety and challenge. Because the seat and backrest can be set in different positions, you can perform different exercises to train several muscle groups.

Here are some of the most common exercises you can do on a weight bench:

Chest exercises

An adjustable weight bench or training bench is ideal for strengthening your chest muscles. Using dumbbells or a barbell, you can train your chest safely. The adjustable backrest lets you focus on a specific area of the chest. Some common chest exercises are:

Bench press

This is probably the best-known and most popular bench exercise. It mainly trains the chest muscles as a whole, as well as the shoulders and triceps. Lie flat on your back on the bench, hold the barbell (or dumbbells) above your chest with your arms extended, lower the bar to your chest, then push it back up until your arms are straight.

Incline bench press

This variation focuses more on the upper chest and the front of the shoulders. The principle is the same as the traditional bench press, but the bench is set at an incline (around 30–45 degrees).

Decline bench press

This focuses more on the lower chest. The bench is set at a downward angle, so you lie on a slight decline while performing the exercise.

Dumbbell flyes

This exercise isolates the chest muscles. Lie on the bench with a dumbbell in each hand, arms extended above your chest, and lower the weights out to the sides until you feel a stretch in your chest. Then bring the weights back up to the starting position.

Shoulder exercises

The shoulder press is an excellent exercise for strengthening the shoulder muscles. Sit on the bench with a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height. Push the weights up until your arms are straight, then slowly lower them again. Make controlled movements to avoid overloading your shoulders.

Arm exercises

A weight bench is ideal support for a range of arm exercises, strengthening both the triceps and biceps.

Triceps dips

With your back to the bench, place your hands on the bench behind you with your legs extended in front of you. Slowly lower yourself by bending your elbows, then push yourself back up until your arms are straight.

Seated dumbbell curl

Sit on the bench with a dumbbell in each hand and let your arms hang relaxed by your sides. Keeping your upper arms still, slowly bend your elbows and bring the dumbbells up towards your shoulders. Squeeze your biceps briefly at the top, then lower the weights slowly back to the starting position.

Leg raises

Lie flat on your back on the bench with your head at the lower end, hold the edges of the bench and lift your legs straight up towards the ceiling, then lower them slowly until they're just above the floor.

Abdominal exercises

Lie on your back on the bench with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Place your hands behind your head and lift your upper body by tightening your abs.

Why every workout space needs a weight bench

As well as the exercises above, there are countless other variations, making the bench an essential piece of equipment in any workout routine.

It lets you train different muscle groups and allows progression by increasing the weight or adjusting the angle of the bench.

Whether you want to build muscle, increase your strength or simply stay in shape, a good weight bench can be a valuable addition to your training equipment. Always maintain good technique and take the right safety precautions when using a bench to prevent injuries.
