Combat Sports Gloves – The Complete Buying Guide

Boxing Gloves vs MMA Gloves

Boxing gloves usually have thicker padding at the front to protect the knuckles when punching, while MMA gloves are more compact and flexible so you can grab and clinch. Training in both disciplines? Choose an all-round MMA glove with extra padding, or keep a separate pair of boxing gloves available.

What Size & Weight (oz) Do I Need?

Glove sizes are expressed in ounces (oz). Use the table below as a guide and always try them on to make sure the gloves fit snugly but comfortably.

Your Body Weight Recommended Glove
< 45 kg6–8 oz (youth boxing)
45–67 kg10 oz (bag training) – 12 oz (sparring)
67–84 kg12 oz (bag) – 14 oz (sparring)
> 84 kg14 oz (bag) – 16 oz (sparring)

Material: PU or Leather?

Synthetic PU is affordable and ideal for beginners. Leather breathes better, lasts longer and moulds to your hand. For intensive use or competition level, we recommend leather gloves with triple-stitched seams.

Inner Gloves & Wraps

Give your wrists extra protection with inner gloves or traditional wraps. Wraps absorb sweat, extend the lifespan of your gloves and help prevent injuries.

Maintenance & Lifespan

  • After training, leave your gloves open to air-dry, never in a closed bag.
  • Use an antibacterial glove spray to help prevent odours and mould.
  • Wash wraps after every use and replace them every three months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one pair of gloves for both boxing and MMA?

You can, but it is not ideal. MMA gloves are lighter and have open fingers for grappling; boxing gloves have extra padding for hard punches. For the best protection, use a dedicated pair for each sport.

How tight should my wraps be?

Tight enough to provide support without restricting blood circulation. Check that your fingers are not tingling and rewrap them if necessary.

How often should I replace my gloves?

With average use (2–3× per week), PU gloves last approximately 12 months; leather gloves can last up to 3 years. Replace them sooner if the padding compresses or the stitching comes loose.

What glove size do I need for competition sparring?

Most federations prescribe 14–16 oz, depending on your weight class. Check the rules of your own federation or gym.

Can I put my gloves in the washing machine?

No. The foam and leather/PU will be damaged. Clean the outside with a damp cloth and use a disinfectant spray on the inside.
