Why Choose a Trampoline?

A trampoline is much more than a toy. It is a complete workout, supports motor development and provides endless fun. Research shows that trampoline use among children with autism spectrum disorder leads to a significant improvement in leg muscle strength and motor skills (Lourenço et al., 2015). Trampoline jumping promotes balance, coordination and social interaction, including among children without developmental disorders.

What Is the Best Trampoline Brand?

Garlando is the brand to choose if you are looking for quality, safety and long-term use. The Garlando trampolines in our range feature robust frames, UV-resistant jumping mats and thick protective padding. All models comply with the EN71 safety standard and are suitable for both recreational and therapeutic use.

What Should You Look for When Buying a Trampoline?

Choosing a trampoline takes careful consideration. Pay attention to the following points:

  • Size: Choose a size that suits the child's age and the available space (see the guidelines below).
  • Safety net: Essential for young children to help prevent falls.
  • Shape: Round trampolines are safer, while square models provide more bounce.
  • Anchoring: Make sure the trampoline stands on a stable surface or consider an in-ground option.
  • Certification: Choose a trampoline with recognised safety marks such as EN71.

Round or Square: Which Trampoline Shape Is Better?

A round trampoline such as the Garlando Combi L or XXL is ideal for young children because the jumping surface naturally directs you towards the centre, making jumping safer. A square trampoline provides a more powerful bounce across the entire surface and is used more often in elite sport. The research by Matsushima (2023) is relevant here, showing that muscle activation in the torso and legs differs by jump type and phase. The shape of the trampoline therefore also affects biomechanics.

Which Trampoline Is the Safest?

Safety comes first when choosing a trampoline. The safest trampolines combine the following features:

  • Safety net: A high, UV-resistant net that is tightly tensioned and covers the full perimeter
  • Thick edge padding: Fully covers the springs and frame to help prevent injuries
  • Stable construction: A galvanised steel frame with wide leg spacing helps prevent tipping
  • Certification: Look for EN71 approval for toy safety, as found on all Garlando trampolines
  • Round shape: Naturally directs users towards the centre of the trampoline, reducing the risk of falls

Biomechanical research shows that the use of specific muscle groups, such as the erector spinae and rectus abdominis, is essential for balance and landing control (Matsushima, 2023). This highlights the importance of a well-designed trampoline that supports these movement patterns without adding injury risk.

All models in our range, from the Combi XS to the Combi XXL, include these safety features. For extra peace of mind, we recommend anchoring the trampoline securely, checking it regularly for wear and always supervising young children while they jump.

What Is the Right Trampoline Size for Children?

Choosing the right trampoline size depends on the child's age, the number of users, the available garden space and the intended use, whether recreational or for motor training. For young children aged 3 to 6, a trampoline with a diameter of 140 to 183 cm is sufficient. Models such as the Combi XS (140 cm) and Combi S (183 cm) provide a safe, clearly defined jumping area suitable for one child at a time. These compact models take up little space and are ideal for smaller gardens or urban environments.

For children aged 7 to 12 or families with several children, a trampoline of at least 244 cm is recommended, such as the Combi M. Older children (12+) and teenagers generally benefit from models measuring 305 cm to 427 cm, such as the popular Combi L, XL or XXL. These provide more freedom of movement, higher jumps and are suitable for several children at the same time.

When choosing a size, also allow for safety zones around the trampoline: at least 1 to 1.5 metres of clear space around it is recommended. For intensive use or motor therapy, such as for children with autism or coordination difficulties, a larger model is beneficial so exercises such as balance drops and rebound squats can be performed safely (see: Lourenço et al., 2015).

Is a Trampoline Healthy?

Yes, trampoline jumping has been shown to be healthy for both body and mind. It is an accessible, playful form of exercise that helps strengthen the cardiovascular system, improve blood circulation and stimulate lymph flow. The latter contributes to the body's natural detoxification and immune system. Every jump also activates the abdominal, glute, leg and back muscles, including the deeper stabilising muscles.

For children, trampoline jumping supports sensory integration, coordination and balance. Research by Lourenço et al. (2015) showed that trampoline training among children with autism increases leg strength and improves motor skills. In addition, Ste-Marie et al. (2011) showed that children learn new trampoline exercises more quickly with video feedback by observing their own progress.

Trampoline jumping also offers mental benefits: it reduces stress, increases endorphin production and improves concentration. This means it can even be used in therapy for ADHD and sensory processing difficulties. In short, a trampoline is not only fun, but also a valuable investment in health and development.

How Many Calories Do You Burn on a Trampoline?

Jumping on a trampoline burns up to 400 calories per half hour, depending on the intensity. This is comparable to running or training on a treadmill. Trampoline jumping, however, places less strain on your joints and is often more enjoyable for children and adults.

How Much Does a Good Trampoline Cost?

At NRG Fitness, prices range from €129 to €599, depending on size and specifications:

  • Combi XS – 140 cm – €129
  • Combi S – 183 cm – €299
  • Combi M – 244 cm – €429
  • Combi L – 305 cm – €469
  • Combi XL – 366 cm – €539
  • Combi XXL – 427 cm – €599

For the price, you get a high-quality trampoline that lasts 8 to 10 years when used correctly.

Is a Trampoline Better Than a Treadmill?

Although a treadmill is an excellent cardio machine, a trampoline offers a unique combination of cardio, strength training and coordination. While a treadmill mainly focuses on the lower limbs and cardiovascular system, trampoline jumping also activates the torso, arms and deep postural muscles. It also improves balance, motor skills and sensory integration, particularly in children and young people.

For children, the jumping element of a trampoline is much more fun and motivating than a treadmill, encouraging them to stay active for longer. It also places less strain on joints such as the knees and ankles because of the cushioning effect of the jumping mat. For people who are overweight, young children or people recovering from an injury, a trampoline is therefore a gentler alternative.

Scientific research such as Ste-Marie et al. (2011) even shows that children learn motor skills more quickly on a trampoline through visual feedback (self-modelling), something that cannot be replicated on a treadmill. In terms of versatility, safety and enjoyment, a trampoline is therefore an excellent choice for the whole family.
