Dumbbells

A dumbbell is essentially a short barbell with weights on each side. The advantage of a dumbbell is that you can use it with one hand, unlike a long barbell that you need to hold with both hands. As soon as you move a weight with just one hand, and therefore one side of your body, you create extra activation in various supporting muscles. Some of these muscles are around your abdomen and lower back, also known as your core. Because these muscles help keep you upright, they work harder when you hold and move a weight on one side of your body. Take a dumbbell press, for example, where you lie on a bench and press the dumbbells upwards to train your chest muscles. When you do this with both hands at the same time, you have two separate weights to press upwards and keep independently in the same position. Your body needs to counterbalance them, which is where your core muscles come in. Dumbbells give you another way to make your core work harder: perform the exercise with one arm at a time while holding the other arm in the lower position. Your abdominal and back muscles will have to work to keep everything stable.

Which Dumbbell Is Suitable for Beginners?

If you are just starting to train, dumbbells weighing only a few kilograms are more than enough. Vinyl dumbbells are a good example. They are practical in size and comfortable to hold, and they are often available from 0.5 kg up to around 6 kg. To let your body get used to training with free weights, this is certainly enough weight for the first four to six months. Do more repetitions and focus on correct technique. That last point in particular will take a few months. As a beginner, you will notice that you first need to work on your core muscles, mobility and technique. Teach yourself this before increasing the weight. Quality over quantity is the rule here. Once the lighter weights start to feel too easy, choose heavier weights. Unsure? If you train at a gym, ask one of the trainers there to look at your technique and assess it. If you train at home, you can judge it yourself or ask someone with more training experience to look at your technique.

What Dumbbell Weight Do I Need?

How do you determine exactly what weight you need? This varies greatly from person to person. If you are a woman weighing 55 kg, you will be able to lift lower weights than a man weighing 90 kg. It is of course certainly possible to catch up with that 90 kg man in terms of strength, but that will take some time. Initially, you will have less natural strength. Start with lighter weights and check whether heavier weights are also available for the dumbbell you choose. When you are ready for more resistance, you can always buy these later. This gives you the opportunity to keep improving both strength and muscular endurance. If you are a reasonably advanced athlete, you can certainly buy dumbbells from 14 kg upwards. Particularly with exercises such as the dumbbell press, you can move to heavier weights fairly quickly. Here too, you can decide between fixed and adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells let you invest a little more in the future straight away. After all, when you get stronger, you do not need to buy new dumbbells; you can continue using your current dumbbells with more weight.

Kettlebell or Dumbbell: The Differences

Kettlebells and dumbbells look very similar, yet they are also very different. Not in their basic purpose, because both are weights with a handle, but in their design and therefore the different exercises you can perform with them. Because the weight of a dumbbell is evenly distributed on both sides of your hand, you can train much heavier with it than with a kettlebell. Because the weight of a kettlebell is fully centred below the handle, kettlebell exercises require many more stabilising muscles. You can let the weight hang below your hand, but for extra variation you can also turn the kettlebell upside down. You then need to grip the handle harder or the weight will fall. Combine this with a static position overhead and, for example, walking lunges to create a very challenging exercise that trains your whole body with a relatively low weight. This is ideal for strengthening your body and preventing injuries. These kinds of full-body exercises are also perfect if you do a lot of sedentary work during the day. Sitting for long periods makes your core muscles much weaker and causes your shoulders to move further forwards. By performing the right muscle-strengthening exercises, you counter this and feel more mobile and fitter. For variety, we recommend exercises with both dumbbells AND kettlebells to keep challenging your body to become stronger.

If you have several dumbbells at home and plan to add more at some point, consider a practical storage rack. This keeps your dumbbells organised together and saves a lot of space. If you do not have much available space, we also supply vertical dumbbell racks so you can store your dumbbells upwards. With your chosen dumbbell, you will often find our recommendation for a suitable rack. This is especially useful to consider straight away when buying round dumbbells, as they do not always stay in place well.
